District Weather NetworkAbout this projectWeather is a critical factor in battling wildfires. The need for accurate, real-time, local weather conditions is critical to safely managing ubran-interface/wildland fires. Recognizing the need for weather information in rural southwestern Bastrop County, Bastrop County ESD No. 1 embarked on a project to install weather stations at all district fire stations. In late 2008, Commissioner Gahagan designed and built a pilot weather station in order to identify the equipment needed to provide accurate information while keeping maintenance and installation costs low. Once the system components were identified, the District funded the installation of seven weather stations, one placed at every fire station in the district. In 2009, the equipment and components were ordered and assembled. Installation began in early summer 2009 with expected completion by early fall 2009. Each weather station is configured to send data to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for inclusion in their database through the Citizens Weather Observer Program (CWOP). This allows NOAA to use the information to more accurately forecast weather and severe storms in the local area. Weather station data is also sent to Weather Underground, PWS Weather, and Weather For You. Weather Station Links
